Painting Tips That Will Make Your Home's Interior 'Pop'Whether you promised your teenager a room makeover for her birthday or you’re simply tired of your home’s color scheme, painting is an easy and cost-effective way to create an entirely new atmosphere within the walls of your home. While you may feel inclined to rush out and grab a few cans of the first paint color that catches your eye, there are numerous factors that need to be taken into consideration before you even begin painting. The following tips will put you on the right track toward a quick and stress-free painting project.
Depending on what room you’re painting, you’ll first want to decide on the correct sheen, which will determine how shiny the paint looks when it’s dry:
Semi-Gloss:Durable and easy to clean, a semi-gloss paint will bring a soft shine to the room without being overpowering.
Eggshell/Satin:Has a smooth finish and subtle sheen, and is washable.
Flat: These paints have a matte coating with no shine. Not only are they ideal for low-traffic areas, they also hide minor dents and nicks.
Next, choose the right color. Keep in mind that finding and choosing a paint color that you love may take some time, so don’t rush the process. If you aren’t sure where to start, try and find some inspiration in magazines or on social networking sites. You may even get some ideas the next time you visit your friends, family or neighbors. Inspiration can come from anywhere, so be sure to keep your eyes open. Once you’ve narrowed down the choices, don’t be afraid to test them out. The last thing you want is to be unhappy with the finished product. Keep the following painting tips in mind when it’s time to get started:
-Consider using a combination paint and primer. This will save you both time and money as it will eliminate the need to use two painting products.
-Work from the top down and complete one entire wall or area at a time.
-Use masking tape to cover areas you don’t want to paint.
-Use a roller and paint in blocks of roughly 4 x 4 feet. Be sure to paint adjacent blocks before each previous block dries to help blend the edges.
-Paint molding and woodwork with a brush, and go with the direction of the wood grain. Short strokes are ideal for coating the surface, and longer, smoother strokes will create an even and finished surface.
-Be sure the room is well ventilated as you paint.
-Pick a paint that dries quickly and has low odor. This way you can move back into the space sooner.
